Salad Days Skateboard Co. Part 4: Moving On (page 1) (2) Over the years I played around with a few designs using the stencil method. The Salinas & Watsonville COTS logo, The Pear Blue Ribbon board & The No Mongo series; plus I made one Suck My Deck board these were all made with stencils & spray paint. It felt great to see that stuff out there, however the process of making each & every board was time consuming & very tedious. Plus I am sort of a perfectionist, so over time I wanted the graphic to look a lot cleaner. I didn't want to see overspray from the stencil on the boards, I also wanted more control in the print, less weight from the paint, faster prints & a shorter drying time; there were numerous factors involved. Over time, I had moved the company out of my parent's house & into Danny Helm's basement. I would work an 8 hour job, go there after & work about 5 more hours on Salad Days. Wind down a few hours (also known as getting drunk), pass out, rinse & repeat. I was working 13-15 hour a day, maybe 5 - 6 days of the week. I did a lot of research into screen printing, I was also building this website (the previous version) & I was filming & making Shred in the Raw; plus I was reading & learning about all the different business tactics & techniques that are out there. The different tasks & jobs that have to be done, actually knowing how to do the jobs & applying it. It's funny how people think that when you are the boss, you work less, but in actuality you work more. If you own any business, you have to know how to do everything. That's called management. If I hire somebody to do a job & I don't know how to do that job myself, or know what the job entails, or what is required to get it done, then how can I oversee, or serve in any input involved in it strategically? What if they couldn't fix it, could you, if you tried & how do you know, if you don't know how it works? Isn't that what makes you the boss? Which is how I attacked it all. I sat there in that basement, that hole in the ground (some nights I thought it would be my grave) & dug through the books & all the information on the internet, soaking it all in as best I could & I prayed to God to see me through.
