Salad Days Skateboard Co. Part 2: Go Big, Or Go Home (1) (page 2) Moving on to the next skateboard company you had around back then that was not really a major company like NHS, but was skater owned & operated is, Consolidated Skateboards. Once again, if you look at the team roster you will see the team riders are barely local. Nobody lives here & if they do, they are rarely to never seen in your area, much less skating spots there, or in the magazines. Santa Cruz local Casey Helseth was recently added to the team & as far as I know that is it for locals. But let's be real here, Casey Helseth is not going to be in Street League, Tampa, Damn Am, nor is his name in high demand. Ask most people who really skate a lot around here who he is, or just who is on their team roster & all you'll hear is crickets (currently, Demarcus James is getting recognition but he is from where again?). For the record, I am not angry at this, or upset. I seriously back Consolidated as a business, I've given them lots of support, verbally, monetarily, I back the Don't Do It campaign & you should too! I am merely pointing out something I have noticed all the years living, growing up, skating, leaving & coming back here. It's an observation. Here is my point to all of this, to say that you represent this area but at the same time, lack locals involved as part of your team? I don't get. What are you representing? Is this the new roots of skateboarding companies now? Don't get me wrong, it's not wrong what they are doing; we all have the freedom to run our businesses as we see fit. But could we have lost our way, & our understanding of what it really is all about? Isn't it kind of a hypocrisy to claim to be local & independent, or to make your city name your brand name & then support little to none of the populus, when it really comes down to it? I understand that there is not a simple solution to all of this because, it's based in politics & profits, which is also why it kind of stinks. I personally believe this area has many great outstanding skaters, that are better than the few that are "chosen" to be sponsored. Don't believe me look at the instagram account. It seems to me that this is what some people would call, a "buddy" system, or a biased agenda. Back in the 90's, I believed it was called "Affirmative Action" & the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional & got rid of it; because it was racist. Which is why today in America, everybody can have a job & not just certain "individuals" (and even that isn't flawless). Because that's what an equal opportunity is really all about.
